Salvinia & Water Hyacinth found in Lake Albert, Wagga Wagga

Wagga Wagga City Council is looking to identify the source of two aquatic noxious weeds after they were recently found growing within Lake Albert.

“Council's Noxious Weeds Inspector has recently discovered Water Hyacinth and Salvinia within the waters of Lake Albert,” Mark Gardiner, Manager Environmental Sustainability and Regulatory Services said.

“These two plants are classified as Class 2 Noxious Weeds under the NSW Noxious Weeds Act 1993.”

A class 2 noxious weed is defined as - Plants that pose a potentially serious threat to primary production or the environment of a region to which the order applies and are not present in the region or are present only to a limited extent.

“Council has acted quickly to remove the weed which will help to ensure the plant does not become established within the lake,” he added.

“We now need to identify where the plant has come from and monitor the lake to ensure there is no further growth.”

“Residents are also reminded that both these plants are prohibited under the Noxious Weeds Act and if they suspect the plants exist in household ponds, farm dams and the like, should contact Council for advice on proper removal techniques.”

Water Hyacinth is identifiable by its light blue-purple or dark blue flowers with a yellow centre and six distinct petals.

Salvinia is a free floating, green coloured fern like plant.

Residents who have information regarding the location of these plants within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area are asked to contact Wagga Wagga City Council on 1300 292 442
