NSW Weed Warriors program update

NSW Weed Warriors program update

The school education program Weed Warriors has been refunded until June 2010 as part of the Caring for our Country Community implementation of biological control of weeds across south-eastern Australia project.

This Caring for our Country project aims to build community capacity and willingness to engage in redistribution of salvinia, bitou bush and bridal creeper biocontrol agents in NSW, leading to an increased distribution of these agents. The project will include training workshops and the establishment of nursery sites for biocontrol agents for salvinia and bitou bush.

Weed Warriors is also a major component of this project and aims to increase student awareness and actively involve them in a biological control program for a local weed infestation.

Lesley Postle has been appointed to assist with the project and will be organising the NSW Weed Warriors program. Lesley Postle has worked in weeds biological control research for the NSW Industry & Investment since 2004.  In addition she has carried out research projects on the salvinia weevil for the University of Western Sydney from 2006 - 2009.

Industry & Investment NSW are currently looking for interested weed professionals to participate in the free biocontrol training workshops and the Weed Warriors program. If you are interested please contact Lesley on (02) 4588 2113 or email lesley.postle@industry.nsw.gov.au.

All resources and training materials associated with the project, including Weed Warriors, will be provided free of charge.
