Suspect Chilean Needle Grass plants found in Balranald & Hay !

Alana Thompson (Balranald weeds officer) and her co-workers discovered 8 suspect plants growing along side a bus transfer stop in Balranald township.

The plants were discovered Thursday 4th September.  Since this time another suspect plant has also been found on the main roundabout in Hay, along the Sturt Highway.

Samples from both sites were sent off to the herbarium for accurate id.

Matt Sheehan the National CNG Co-ordinator followed up with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney and they identified the specimen that Alana sent in to be the native grass species. Austrostipa scabra ssp. falcata.   The Hay specimen came back as Austrostipa Nodasa.  Both native grasses

Matt commented “While this is fantastic news, there is an equally important outcome from this, and that is the demonstration of the importance of being vigilant in reporting suspected new and emerging weeds and seeking expert opinion where required.  We must applaud Alana and Paul for their efforts.
